Moderna’s combination Covid, flu vaccine is more effective than existing shots in late-stage trial
Moderna’s messenger RNA combination shot, called mRNA-1083, is made up of both the company’s vaccine candidate for seasonal influenza and a newer, “next-generation” version of its Covid shot. Both of those experimental vaccines – mRNA-1010 and mRNA-1283 – have shown positive results in separate phase three trials.
The ongoing late-stage trial on mRNA-1083 examined the combination shot in 8,000 patients.
The study compared the combination shot with an enhanced flu vaccine called Fluzone HD and Moderna’s currently licensed Covid shot, Spikevax, in one group of patients ages 65 and above. The trial also compared Moderna’s combination jab with a standard flu shot called Fluarix and Spikevax in another group of participants between the ages of 50 and 64.
In both age groups, a single dose of Moderna’s combination vaccine produced “statistically significantly higher” immune responses against three strains of influenza and the Covid omicron variant XBB.1.5.
Moderna said the safety of the combination shot, along with how well patients could tolerate it, was acceptable. The most common side effects were injection site pain, fatigue, muscle pain and headache. The majority of those effects were mild to moderate in severity. |

Based on the totality of the evidence, on June 6, 2024, FDA initially advised the manufacturers of the licensed and authorized COVID-19 vaccines that the COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 Formula) for use in the United States beginning in fall 2024 should be monovalent JN.1 vaccines.
FDA has continued to monitor the circulating strains of SARS-CoV-2. Based on the most current available data, along with the recent rise in cases of COVID-19 in areas of the country, the agency has further determined that the preferred JN.1-lineage for the COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 Formula) is the KP.2 strain, if feasible. This change is intended to ensure that the COVID-19 vaccines (2024-2025 Formula) more closely match circulating SARS-CoV-2 strains. FDA has communicated this change to the manufacturers of the licensed and authorized COVID-19 vaccines. The agency does not anticipate that a change to KP.2 will delay the availability of the vaccines for the United States. |

При этом

COVID surge grows as cases in 26 states now ‘very high’ and ‘high,’ CDC says
Cases of COVID-19 are growing across 45 states, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said virus levels in 26 of those states are now “very high” or “high.”
Across parts of the west, including in California, Nevada, Oregon and Texas, and states in the east like Arkansas, Florida and Maryland have seen cases reach “very high” levels as wastewater levels over the past month have risen. |
The omicron strains that continue to dominate the number of COVID-19 cases in the nation are KP.3 and KP.2, part of the FLiRT family of strains descended from the omicron variant. “FLiRT” derives from the technical names of their mutations, according to the Infectious Disease Society of America.
Between 18% and 31% of COVID-19 cases are due to the spread of KP.3, while 17% to 30% of cases are caused by KP.2, according to the CDC’s COVID-19 tracking data.
As the FLiRT strains spread, the Food and Drug Administration advised in June drug manufacturers to develop COVID-19 boosters to target the KP.2 strain to be administered in the fall. |

The US is experiencing its largest summer Covid wave in at least two years
The US is in the midst of a significant Covid-19 wave, with viral activity levels in wastewater the highest they’ve been for a summer surge since July 2022, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s wastewater dashboard.
The CDC’s measure of national Covid viral activity in wastewater rose to 8.82 on August 10 – falling shy of a peak of 9.56 in July 2022. The CDC says the most recent data is incomplete and may change. Before it started rising again in May, it was at 1.36.

The CDC’s wastewater data closely aligns with what they’re seeing at the nationwide WastewaterSCAN network, too.
WastewaterSCAN also began monitoring in early 2022 and the number of sites that it monitors has changed over time.
“Despite these changes, it’s notable that levels right now for WastewaterSCAN are much higher than previous summer peaks and yet still below the average concentrations at the height of the winter peaks in 2023, 2022, and 2021,” said Dr. Alexandria Boehm, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Stanford University and program director for WastewaterSCAN.
Health officials no longer track the coronavirus as closely as they did during the public health emergency, and there are no longer reliable estimates of daily or weekly new infections in the US. Instead, the nation is largely relying on wastewater levels to follow numbers of new cases. |
