Complementary analyses undertaken in England and Scotland found an increased risk of hospitalisation in cases who were S gene target positive (Scotland) or had sequence-confirmed Delta variant infection (England). Confirmatory analyses are required to confirm the magnitude of the change in risk and to explore the link to vaccination in more detail.
England
Based on a record linkage of sequence-confirmed Delta and Alpha cases in England tested between 29 March 2021 and 20 May 2021, an analysis of 38,805 sequenced cases was performed to assess the risk of hospitalisation and emergency care attendance. Using stratified Cox proportional hazard regression, there was a significantly increased risk of hospitalisation within 14 days of specimen date (HR 2.61, 95% CI 1.56-4.36, p < 0.001), and emergency care attendance or hospitalisation within 14 days (HR 1.67, 1.25-2.23, p < 0.001), for Delta cases compared to Alpha cases after adjustment for confounders (age, sex, ethnicity, area of residence, index of multiple deprivation, week of diagnosis and vaccination status).
Scotland
In the Public Health Scotland/EAVE II study, Cox proportional hazard regression was used to estimate risk factors for the time from test to hospitalisation among individuals who tested positive.Hospitalisation with COVID-19 was defined as any admission within 14 days of a positive test or where there was a positive test within 2 days of admission.The model was adjusted for age and days from 1 April 2021 as spline terms together with number of co morbid conditions, gender and vaccination status.Vaccination status was determined at the data of the PCR test. Only individual who tested positive from 1 April 2021 onwards (until 30 May 2021) were included in this analysis.There was an increased hazard ratio of hospitalisation for those who were S-gene positive compared with those with S-gene target failure(2.39, 95% 1.72 to 3.31). |

На самом деле это выступление совсем не о Фаучи, а о Карлсоне, который выдал десятиминитку ненависти, либо совершенно не понимая, о чем говорит, либо сознательно искажая факты. Вешать я его не стал бы, но уволить с Фокса и не подпускать близко к телевидению его нужно. |

Spared for Months, Vietnam Faces a Wave of New Infections
Vietnam has prided itself on successfully containing the coronavirus since the pandemic began. As the country’s neighbors tallied their dead and imposed nationwide lockdowns, the Vietnamese government kept the virus at bay by relying on strict quarantine measures, diligent contact tracing and localized lockdowns.
The Communist nation has recorded 7,572 cases and just 48 deaths since January of last year, according to a New York Times database. By contrast, nearby Malaysia, which imposed a national lockdown on Tuesday, has recently recorded higher case numbers in a single day.
“Vietnam is now officially entering the pandemic,” Tran Van Phuc, a doctor who posts frequently about the virus, wrote on Facebook. “The next 12 months will be the most difficult in controlling the number of infections so as not to overwhelm the health system and limit the number of deaths.” Dr. Phuc said the country’s low rate of vaccinations combined with the new outbreaks place Vietnam in the position that many countries faced early last year.
On Monday, the government ordered a two-week lockdown of the Go Vap District of Ho Chi Minh City, home to about 700,000 people and the neighborhood in which the couple’s church, Revival Ekklesia Mission, is located. Residents were ordered to stay home as much as they could, work from home if possible, avoid other people and wear masks in public. A smaller part of the city, Thanh Loc Ward in District 12, was placed under the same order.
Large gatherings have been banned across the city, Vietnam’s most populous, and the government said it planned to test its nine million inhabitants. |

CDC director urges parents to vaccinate teens, pointing to increase in severe cases
The study looked at 376 adolescents ages 12 to 17 who were hospitalized between Jan. 1 and March 31 and tested positive for the coronavirus. Of that total, 204 youths were hospitalized primarily for covid-19, the report said, with 31 percent admitted to an intensive care unit and 5 percent requiring invasive mechanical ventilation. None of the youths died. (The report said the other 172 hospitalized youths may have been admitted for reasons not directly related to covid-19.)
About 70 percent of the 204 adolescents hospitalized primarily for covid-19 had at least one underlying medical condition — the most common being obesity. But nearly 30 percent had no reported underlying condition, the report said, “indicating that healthy adolescents are also at risk for severe covid-19-associated disease.”
Among the 204 teens, 52 percent were female, 31 percent were Latino and 36 percent were Black.
Researchers said the cumulative covid-19 hospitalization rates for the adolescents from Oct. 1, 2020, through April 24, 2021, were 2.5 to three times higher than seasonal-influenza-associated hospitalization rates during three recent flu seasons.
“Flu very rarely causes long-term symptoms and organ damage — unlike covid-19,” said Andrew Pavia, a professor of pediatrics and infectious diseases at the University of Utah. “Adolescents have many reasons to get vaccinated as soon as possible, including their own health, the ability to help control covid-19 among more vulnerable groups and the ability to return to normal life.” |
