I'm pleased to announce a new way to calculate performance ratings in tournaments, sharing it for the first time here on Twitter/X.
The Complete Performance Rating (CPR) is defined even for zero or perfect scores.
CPR is defined as the hypothetical rating R such that if the player were assigned this rating at the start of a tournament where the player scored m points in n games, and additionally drew a game against an opponent with a rating R, the player's initial rating would remain unchanged.
The main idea behind the CPR is that drawing a game against an opponent with the same rating does not change a player's rating.
The main difference between the standard Tournament Performance Rating (TPR) and CPR is that TPR is the rating that would remain unchanged after scoring m points in n games. However, for perfect scores, no such rating exists, and hence TPR is undefined in those cases.
Definition: Let R_a be the rating average of the opposition in n games. Solve for R in the following equation
R = (n R_a + R)/(n + 1) - 400 log_10 (n + 1 - m - 0.5)/(m + 0.5),
to get the formula:
CPR(m, n, R_a) = R_a - (1/n) 400 (n + 1) log_10 (n +0.5 - m )/(m + 0.5).
This formula is essentially as simple as the original TPR formula, which can be calculated using a calculator. I think that the estimated performance rating is preferable when access to a computer is available. But the CPR formula is more practical since it doesn’t require solving an optimization problem.
The table below shows best historical performance rating from win streaks. Elo ratings before the official ratings were introduced are taken from Chess Metrics.
btw many players in London at the moment. I spoke with this Pinkerton lie detector company, they said ready to examine chessplayers if they wish. Takes just a couple of hours, very interesting, I liked. Anyone ready? Would be great, setting standarts for future. Welcomed
