There are people in this world who expand our understanding of what is possible. These are the people who are not fixated with the norms. They are not interested in maintaining the status quo. They keep pushing the boundaries all the time.
And one such personality in the world of chess is Vishy Anand. Vishy is right now 55 years old and has not been playing much chess since the last few months. When he decided to play at the Jerusalem Masters against players like Ian Nepomniachtchi, Arjun Erigaisi, Vladimir Fedoseev, Peter Svidler and strong young Israeli talents, it was clear that Vishy Anand was not the favourite to make it to top 4.
However, with Vishy, if there is one thing that we have learnt over the years is that, you can never count him out. Anand played an incredible Round Robin phase of the tournament scoring 7.5/11 with 7 draws and 4 wins - staying unbeaten and finishing joint second. He managed to score wins over - Fedoseev, Kobo, Sokolovsky and Boruchovsky.
With this performance Anand sets up his semi-finals clash against Ian Nepomniachtchi. Arjun Erigaisi will take on Peter Svidler in the other semi-finals.
The format of the semi-finals is two games of 15+5 and in case of a 1-1 tie, we go into two games of 3+2 blitz and in case of 1-1 again, we have an Armageddon. It's quite possible that we could see an all-Indian finals if both Anand and Arjun manage to win. While Arjun can be said to be a small favourite in his mini-match against Svidler, with Vishy, it is Nepo who is the slightly stronger player.
