When the Chicken Chess Podcast was still running, the hosts made a lot out of talking about improvement through playing blitz. How the young generation seem to be climbing the ladder playing lots of blitz online.
I don't think anyone have ever disputed that some benefits come from playing all forms of chess. Training is probably at least 60% effective, just by showing up. But the idea that this was a new super method of improvement seemed to counter intuitive to me. 18 months later, I have no reason to question my intuition.
Who are the blitzers? Firouzja, Niemann, Sarin and others. Who are the classically trained players? Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, Erigaisi and more.
Especially Abdusattorov. In 2022 we focused a lot on training and playing classical tournaments. At the beginning of the year, he was a talented 2650 GM. By the autumn he was instrumental in winning the Olympiad, and by January 2023, he was leading Wijk aan Zee into the last round, in front of all the best players in the World.
In 2023 he played a lot of frivolous events. By the autumn he had collected good prize funds, but also realised his progress had stalled. He had won events of little weight and disappointed in the events qualifying to the Candidates. I don't think I violate any confidence by saying that he made the connection himself.
Nihal was one of the leading talents of the Indian wave. He chose to focus on online blitz and became great at online blitz. He is still young and could catch up with the other young players in the power rankings, should he chose to; but the window is closing.
What does it mean for the regular #chesspunks. Blitz is fine. Blitz is fun. But it is not improving your ability to solve complex problems. It helps a little with pattern recognition. For example, if you use it to learn your openings and you check the games briefly afterwards, you will get something from them. But it is the checking and the hopefully deeper investigation you do as a part of it, that will help you improve.
If you want a fun, meaningful thing you can do on your own, I would recommend solving "easy" puzzles. Don't try to find the most difficult problems you can find. Choose easy ones, where you do not have to move mountains, but have to learn to "look for options" and will absorb patterns along the way. That will benefit your chess a whole deal, and is far more useful for your progress than playing online blitz (whatever effect that might have).
Playing online rapid is another discussion. You have time to think a few times in rapid games. These are definitely helpful. |

GM Jacob Aagaard
I have been way too busy to keep up with the C-Squared Podcast recently, but I read that FabianoCaruanahad said something along the lines of "ratings are there for a reason", with the argument that top players are not insulated from the grind of open tournaments and rating deflation, but could actually win rating from playing opens.
I have a different intuition on the topic. It is my feeling that for every success story you have of a top seed winning, you have a handful of disappointments.
I thus decided to check out the last two opens where players that play in the "circuit" of invitational tournaments participate, the Grand Swiss and Qatar Masters and decided to look at the rating "progress" of the top 10.
I had no idea of what I would find. I decided on the test criteria before looking anything up. I do not say this is of statistical value, as the scope is too little. But that is a real point. The top players do not play these events a lot, and it is hard for other players to break into the elite events, from the circuit of open tournaments. You not only have to perform well, you also have to meet a lot of non-sporting requirements, such as being from a country without too many top players, preferably be 11 years old, and in other ways catch the eye of the organisers... |
